Yuka Tomioka’s delicate ‘Anew Sweater’ in Ulysse and Bérénice

Designer Yuka Tomioka @yety_knits has created an elegant sweater knitted in our yarns Ulysse and Bérénice held together.
The ‘Anew’ sweater is knitted seamlessly from the neckline with a delicate eyelet cable pattern that continues from the neckline to the raglan sleeves and is repeated, with variations, to emphasise the lower body and sleeves. The back is slightly longer than the front and the sweater has wide side splits to add a touch of comfort and modernity.

Yuka chose to combine Ulysse and Bérénice yarns to create a soft, feminine and cosy fabric, like a cocoon!

Many of you fell in love with this pattern and we are delighted to offer a French version so that French-speaking knitters can enjoy it with complete peace of mind!

CONSTRUCTION

Anew Sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down. First, the collar featuring an eyelet cable pattern is worked in the round and starts with a German twisted cast-on. Then, the yoke is worked back and forth at first with German short rows to make the back higher while making raglan increases at the same time. It is worked again in the round to the underarms while continuing on raglan increases.

Once the stitches are divided into the body and sleeves at the underarms, it is worked in the round until the start of side splits. Then the front and the back is worked back and forth separately in the eyelet cable pattern, which flows from the collar to the hem, through the raglans.
The sleeves are worked in the round in stockinette stitch and tapered every few rounds, and the eyelet cable pattern is worked at the cuffs.

TECHNIQUES USED AND SKILL LEVEL

This pattern is for intermediate knitters and skills required include German twisted cast-on, binding off, increasing and decreasing, knitting in the round and picking up stitches, German short rows, cables, knowing how to read a chart.

The pattern includes video tutorials for the techniques used.

THE YARN

This pattern combines our Ulysse carded merino yarn with our Bérénice mohair/merino/silk blend for a comfortable, cosy and subtly sophisticated result with a very discreet touch of Bérénice silk. This blend allows you to play with colours by combining tone-on-tone or slightly contrasting colours between the two yarns.

The two yarns are knitted together to achieve a gauge of 18 sts x 25 rounds for 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch using the largest needles (between 4.5 and 5.5 mm depending on your knitting style).

You will need 6 (7, 7, 7) (8, 8, 9) 9 balls of Ulysse (French mérinos d’Arles and Portuguese black merino woolen spun in France, 202 yards (185 m) / 50 g) and 5 (6, 6, 7) (7, 7, 8) 8 balls of Bérénice (55% Super Kid Mohair labelled RMS, Responsible Mohair Standards (South Africa), 25 % mulberry silk (China), 20 % organic Merinos d’Arles (France) – 230 yds (210 m) / 25 g) to knit it.

For a pure wool version that is more raw and authentic, you can also knit this pattern with the same gauge using our Gilliatt yarn (French Arles merino and Portuguese black merino, carded, 250 m / 50 g). You will then need 5 (5, 5, 6) (6, 6, 7) 7 balls of 100g.

Yuka chose natural ecru colours for her sample: ‘sel’ for Ulysse and ‘crème’ for Bérénice.

Here are some other ideas for combinations that we have knitted into the ‘Anew’ pattern:

You will find other ideas for combinations of Ulysse and Bérénice, in tone-on-tone or slightly mottled colours, in this blog post.

HOW TO PICK YOUR SIZE

The « Anew sweater » sweater is available in 8 sizes corresponding to the final measurements:

Finished bust circumference: 101 (105.5, 110, 116.5)(123.5, 130, 139) 150 cm / 39.75 (41.5, 43.25, 45.75) (48.5, 51.25, 54.75) 59 inches
Upper arm circumference: 36 (37, 37, 40.5) (40.5, 42.5, 44) 45 cm / 14.25 (14.5, 14.5, 16) (16, 16.75, 17.25) 17.75 inches

If you choose a positive ease of 18 to 23 cm as recommended by the designer, you will obtain a relatively loose fit.

You can also choose a size that allows you to obtain the ease that suits you.

For example, if your chest measurement is 90 cm, you can choose:

  • size 2 for a positive ease of 15,5 cm at the chest for a slightly more fitted result

or

  • size 3 for a comfortable 28 cm ease at the bust for a result identical to the version photographed

The top-down construction allows you to easily adjust the length of the sleeves and lower body to your preference.

Yuka Tomioka’s ‘Anew Sweater’ pattern is available in French and English on our website and in English, Japanese and Korean on Ravelry.

I hope you will like this pattern and that it will inspire you to create a cosy little cocoon for yourself this autumn!
