Sometimes the best things are the simplest and that’s why I wanted to share with you this very satisfying little project, tested over a few winters at home :). Here is a light, practical and voluptuously cozy cowl that will make a perfect shelter against the cold winter winds and a nice easy-to-adopt gift for those who deserve a hand-knitted present this Christmas!
It is knitted in shaker rib stitch (also called “half fisherman’s ribs”) which gives it a lot of comfiness and a different pattern on each side. It can be worn either inside out or right side up and the height can be easily adjusted by folding it over for a nice turtleneck effect. At home, kids really appreciate the fact that they can pull it up high to ride their scooters in the cold and keep it folded for the rest of the day.
The shaker rib stitch seems to be a perfect match with our soft worsted spun yarn Penelope as it emphasizes its great stitches definition as well as its round and slightly satiny aspect. It’s a real pleasure to see the ribs being drawn and, once you are used to the ” purl one stitch from the row below”, you’ve got a few hours of meditative and beneficial knitting ahead of you, very compatible with a little movie 🙂
“Kled” is a Breton word for “sheltered (mostly from the wind)”.
YARN
2 balls of Penelope De Rerum Natura (90% organic Arles merino, 10% silk, 133 m/50g) (You will need about 200 m or 75 g in total for a collar, so with 3 balls you can make one for yourself and offer the second :))
The samples pictured are knitted in the colours “chocolat chaud“, “orgeat” and “crépuscule“.

Work in shaker ribs stitch :
Round 1 : Knit all stitches.
Round 2 : *Knit 1, purl 1 stitch below, repeat from * until the end of the round.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until piece measures approximately 9.2 inches/ 23,5 cm from cast-on edge.
Work again 5 rounds in 1/1 ribs : *Knit 1, purl 1, repeat from * to end of round.
Bind off all stitches in pattern (knitted stitches knit wise, purled one purl wise).
Weave in the ends, put your cowl in warm water to make it soft and fluffy. Roll it in a towel to remove excess water and dry it flat without stretching it.. Et voilà !
I hope you like this pattern and that it will help to pamper you for the coming months!
