Our version of Hiromi Nagasawa’s beautiful ‘Snowfield’ published in Laine Magazine 23

Japanese designer Hiromi Nagasawa @pucco_h created the superb Snowfield sweater for this winter’s issue of Laine Magazine, which we immediately wanted to try out in Gilliatt and Bérénice!

It’s a very elegant design, with wide, undulating cables criss-crossing strips of stockinette stitch punctuated by fine vertical stripes in fancy stitch, creating a perfect balance between sophistication and simplicity. The wide stand-up collar is designed to comfortably cope with the cold of winter, while the augmentation work highlights the design of the shoulders and contributes to the modern silhouette of this beautiful, warm and elegant classic design.

This pullover is knitted using a 14 st x 20 rows gauge for 10 x 10 cm of stockinette stitch with recommended 6 mm needles, making it a rewarding and quick project to knit!

The combination of a strand of Gilliatt with a strand of Berenice creates a luxurious fabric that is particularly warm and cosy, and very comfortable to wear. We chose to use the ‘biche’ colour, available in both yarn ranges. Although tone on tone, the difference in material and the presence of the silk thread in Bérénice, which doesn’t quite take the dye in the same way as the other fibres, creates a lovely depth and a warm, subtle hue. On this page you’ll find other ideas for combining yarns from our carded range with Bérénice.

CONSTRUCTION

This pattern is knitted seamlessly from top to bottom, so it will be easy to adjust to your measurements and preferences: first the neckline is worked back and forth, then the rest of the yoke continues in the round. Once the yoke is finished, the work is divided between the body and the sleeves, which are knitted one after the other in the round, finishing with a 2/1 ribbed border for the lower body and the cuffs. Finally, the collar stitches are picked up around the neckline to knit the collar in 2/2 ribbing in the round.

Vertical lines knitted in seed stitch and K1b Rib stitch run the full height of the front and back, while large flat cables worked on 8 stitches are placed on the front of the body and the sleeves.
