A soft and cosy Type-V cardigan

With its generous balloon sleeves, deep neckline and slightly asymmetrical cut, Noriko Ichikawa’s Type V cardigan – which we first showcased in the ‘poivre’ and ‘bouleau’ Gilliatt versions last spring – has inspired us to create a soft, colourful version in Candide and Bérénice for the start of the new season!

Céline has knitted this lovely version, which is perfect for those early mornings and evenings at the start of our autumn in Toulouse – which still feels very much like summer 🙂

Pattern  « Type-V cardigan » by Noriko Ichikawa, avaible in french and in english on our website in 10 sizes corresponding to a finished chest circumference of 117 to 163,5 cm.

DETAILS OF OUR VERSION IN CANDIDE AND BERENICE HELD TOGETHER

Our version is knitted in size 2 and Céline wears it with 30,5 cm of positive ease at the chest.

For this version, we have chosen to knit together using tone-on-tone colours: one skein of Candide yarn (70% organic Arles Merino and 30% recycled cotton, 185 m / 50 g), in the colour ‘citronnade’, and one skein of Bérénice yarn (55% Super Kid Mohair, 25% silk, 20% organic Arles Merino; 210 m / 25 g), in the colour ‘crème anglaise’, to achieve the same gauge as the original pattern knitted in Gilliatt.

The pattern recommends a gauge of 18 sts x 28 rows, which Céline achieved using 4.5 mm needles. Take the time to swatch to ensure you achieve the correct gauge.

The result is beautifully soft and slightly fluffy, with a pleasant, subtle touch of freshness and texture provided by the recycled cotton.

The combination of the ‘citronnade’ and ‘crème anglaise’ colours creates a soft, blended yellow here, but you could also create more mottled effects by choosing shades that are more or less similar. You’ll find other colour combination ideas that we’ve swatched in this article!

You will need 6 (6, 7, 7) 7, 7, 7 (8, 8, 8) balls of Candide (250 m /100g) and 5 (6, 6, 6) 6, 6, 7 (7, 7, 7) balls of Bérénice to knit this version.

CONSTRUCTION

The Type V cardigan is knitted in the round from the neckline. You begin by working the back of the neckline with a few short rows before creating a yoke using a raglan construction. After separating the body from the sleeves, the body is knitted flat up to the 3 x 1 ribbed edge, then the sleeves are knitted in the round. Finally, stitches are picked up along the front and neckline edges to create a 1×1 ribbed button band, with buttonholes worked simultaneously.

As the cardigan is knitted from the top down, you can try it on as you go along to adjust the length of the body and sleeves. You can also customise the number of buttons to suit your preferences.
